IEC 61439 vs IS 8623: Understanding the Shift in Electrical Panel Standards
The transition from legacy IS 8623 / IEC 60439 to the updated IEC 61439-1 & 2 series represents a fundamental revolution in low-voltage switchgear assembly safety.
Under IS 8623, panels were classified into Type Tested Assemblies (TTA) and Partially Type Tested Assemblies (PTTA). This created ambiguities where minor structural changes made panels non-compliant.
IEC 61439 eliminates PTTA and replaces it with strict Design Verification. Every assembly must be verified through either testing, calculation, or comparison with an established reference design.
Key parameters defined by IEC 61439 include Temperature Rise Limits (Section 10.10), Short Circuit Withstand (Section 10.11), Ingress Protection (Section 10.3), and Internal Arc Containment.
